They are the Elvex Go Specs. Check out the safety glasses Hybrid! Go-Specs™ provide an extra measure of protection in dusty and dirty environments. Wind blown particles such as dust, sand, cement, and chemicals can cause serious eye irritation and damage. Also beneficial for contact wearers and suffers of dry eye syndrome.

These safety goggles are lined with a layer of durable resistant foam on the inside. The foam has periodic air spaces to prevent fogging and moisture build up. They are very popular especially in the lab environment. They also come with impact resistant molded lens with SuperCoat™ anti-fog coating. The Elvex Go Specs can be viewed here: http://www.safetyglassesinc.com/Elvex/Safety-Goggles/Elvex-Go-Specs-Clear-Anti-Fog-Safety-Goggles/.

My fruit basket is full of safety glasses. Really. It makes sense when you know that my writing station is located close to the double decker fruit basket where I hang safety glasses after trying them out. I decided to go through and share my favorites.

I have a couple of favorites I use for biking or if I have to do yard work. I go for fit, style and comfort. My husband, aka Mellon head, also has some favorites but basically, if they fit his mellon head, he’s happy.

Top Safety Glasses Choices at a Low Cost:
-Cute, comfy and cheap. What can be better than that? Elvex’s Chica is perfect for females or males with narrow faces. They’re snug without being too tight.
-I’m a big fan of indoor/outdoor safety glasses and that’s why the Avion and Fuel are perfect. I love that they’re multi-purpose.
-Got the mellon head thing going on? Finding safety glasses that have flexible temples is a must for you. Try the Elvex’s Trix and you’ll notice you can’t beat the price.

The number one complaint we hear about safety glasses? Scratches. What can one do about it? Research shows not much. There are many different products that claim to remove scratches, but most reviews are negative. Just search “Liquid Scratch Removal Kit” if you want to get an earful. Brusso, Armor etch, and Glass Etching Cream are just a few of the suggestions out there. Many of these are actually removing the anti-reflective coating where the scratches were located, not removing the scratches from the plastic.

Here are some things you CAN do:

Use a carrying case when not in use.

Buy scratch resistant lenses (NOT the same as scratch proof!) We have noticed a difference in the coating helping decrease the amount of scratching, but it’s not a perfect world.

We’ve noticed that mid-to-higher end safety glasses are less likely to get scratched- the $2 pair is more likely to get scratched.

Don’t clean them with paper towels! Use a clothe instead.

I wish I had better news for you. Here, let me make you feel better. You could have bought the $15 Liquid Scratch Removal kit that is worthless to get rid of the scratches in your $7 safety glasses.

If you have some kind of miracle solution, we would love to hear about it. Send us a note.

(Thank you!)

“Today I’m glad I had my safety glasses on. The group decided to clean up the lab so we organized, swept and mopped the garage. I was refilling the water/cleaning solution and a good few drops splashed up right on the lens of my glasses. Close call, because we use this industrial strength cleaner and degreaser which probably would have done some serious ocular damage.”

Close call stories are a good reminder on why we need to use preventative measures at work and at home. I’ve waded through many photos of eye injuries -they all look painful. There really is no excuse for not wearing eye protection – stylish, bifocals, anti-fog, over-specs, inexpensive, padded, shaded, small, melon-head size, etc.. there really is something for everyone.

*Safety Reminder for the Oblivious: It’s important to make sure that designs don’t inhibit your eye sight. You don’t want to cause an accident because you can’t see.

I have to share about my new favorite, multi-purpose safety glasses – Elvex Avion Indoor/Outdoor Safety Glasses. They are great for many reasons but I LOVE Indoor/Outdoor safety glasses because I don’t need to have tons of pairs lying around to meet different needs.

Besides being great for yard projects where I am going in and out of sunny areas or in and outside, I have also been using them for biking! I am training for a triathlon and I am riding outside regularly. I need to keep the wind, sun and bugs out of my eyes (especially important for contact wearers like me). The Indoor/Oudoor Safety Glasses have enough sun reflection to keep the sun off my eyes but are clear enough to keep wearing when the sun goes behind the cloud so that I don’t have to worry about them being too dark. Who wants to lug around extra stuff like another pair of glasses? I don’t like really dark sun glasses for biking anyway – I save those for boating. Also, Elvex’s Avion has a snug fit that’s not too tight.

DeWalt has been making safety glasses for several years now, but I’m always surprised to find out how many loyal DeWalt users and carpentry workers don’t know they exist. So here’s a brief look at some awesome glasses backed by a top notch brand.

The glasses are manufactured by Radians, and have a nice range of price. It’s also important to point out that the quality is very respectable. Trust me, I have no qualms about throwing a manufacturer under the bus, and I don’t like getting close enough to people’s asses to blow smoke up them. So here are three of the styles I like…

The DeWalt Protector is you low end safety glasses, but they are extremely well made. I was really impressed by the quality for a basic style like this. You can get cheaper glasses, but the quality won’t match this specimen.

The DeWalt Reinforcer RX is a very stylish pair of bifocal safety glasses. For a long time the word style and bifocal never went together. This is one of the first styles to bridge the gap. It still holds up nicely and has good number of comfort features.

The DeWalt Ventilator is the high end pair of safety glasses from DeWalt. It borrows a bit from the AO Safety Fuel (as far as style is concerned), but the price is way better. Take a look at this style if your having compliance issues. It might help out.

So there you go.

Yep, Safety Glasses Inc. stocks Orange County Choppers Safety Glasses and they are sharp. They’re manufactured by AO Safety, so they’ve got that going for them. Secondly, most of them have slick metal frames and are as sturdy as Aunt Mildred’s 3-point stance.

These babies are full of fashion, and are a fraction of the cost of other designer safety glasses. Did I mention that they look stupendous? They do. So check them out. And as a little bonus here’s a little introductory video we put together a year or so ago.

Are we in a Recession? Apparently. Oh well. Here’s the thing though. In tough times, individuals and companies are looking for any way to save a buck. They start cutting things. Unfortunately, in our haste and panic we often cut the wrong things. Safety is not an area to cut out.

It is possible to save money, and still provide your employees with safety gear to keep them out of harm’s way.

Look, I love the Wiley X safety glasses as much as the next guy. They look awesome, and I’m pretty damn sure they improve compliance. However, there are less expensive models available that keep your eyes just as safe. Hell, you can get a ton of safety glasses for under $4 a pair.

Remember you can save money by changing the style, but don’t cut out safety all together. You’ll regret it for the rest of your life if something happens.

Recently I was asked about Indoor/Outdoor Safety Glasses so I dug through Frank’s Reports (the one on lens colors) and chopped out the portion about I/O lenses. Thanks for your question!

The indoor/outdoor lens is actually a clear lens with a mirrored coating. The mirrored coating reflects sunlight and glare, which cuts down on eye fatigue and strain. It provides protection in the sun, but because of its clear lens and the high amount of visible light that passes through, this lens is effective inside as well.

The unique nature of this lens helps your eyes adjust when moving from a shaded area to a bright area and vice versa. Without these this lens it’s like a punch in the face every time you go in and out. This lens is ideal for individuals that work outside, but take a large number unnecessary breaks inside. Indoor/Outdoor lenses allows individuals to wear the same pair of safety glasses for indoor and outdoor applications. The most important thing to remember is to make sure that the door is shut when the air conditioner is on.

The indoor/outdoor lens can be used for most applications, whether they’re inside or out. They work best for individuals moving from shade to direct sunlight and back again. You know… people who have trouble making up their mind.

Temples are a huge component of safety glasses and eye protection, and as a result let’s go over some of the common used terms when discussing this piece of equipment.

First of a ll what is a temple? Well, a temple is the plastic or metal that stretches from the frame of your safety glasses to your ears. Clear? Now here are the variants.

Pivoting or Ratcheting Temples: The ability to tilt or adjust the angle of the temple up and down in order to provide a comfortable or specific fit.

Adjustable Temples: The manipulation of the temple in length in order to accommodate various sized faces, depending on how far the ears are away from the eyes.

Temple Tips: The end of the temple by your ear. These are often covered in rubber for comfort.

Polarized lenses offer a gray lens with a mirror coating. The mirror eliminates the sun’s glare and keeps your eyes comfortable and relaxed. A polarized lens only allows 12% visible light transmission. Which is more protection than a simple gray or mirrored lens.

The best aspect of the polarized lens is its rich color spectrum. Even though your eyes are protected, you can still see clearly. You’ll finally be able to see the detail and glory of all ten pounds of Aunt Millie’s blush.

As you would assume, these lenses are for outdoor use.

Popular Polarized Examples:
What are we going to do with you? You had nowhere to go but down at Las Vegas Motor Speedway after the 500. But seriously, last place? Okay if I am going to be fair, engine failure is a good reason to come in last – if you have to have a reason. At least if you’re going to do it, do it big and looking good.

In case you’re wondering, I do realize that I have picture of NASCAR rookie Joey Logano. I was looking for cools photos of Matt wearing Wiley X and Joey popped up looking so fine. Joey has just been added to Wiley X’s growing list of NASCAR drivers.

Wiley X Eyewear has quickly become a top choice for drivers because of the superior visual performance and High-Velocity Protection technology. And they just look so darn good when you’re wearing them.

I thought it would be a good idea to go over some terminology used in the world of safety glasses so we’re all on the same page. This time I’d like to share with you the definitions of a “Nose Bridge” and “Nose Piece” Let’s go.

Nose Bridge: Connects the two lenses together and rests on the top of your nose.

Nose Piece: Refers to the piece of rubber or plastic that straddles the side of your nose.

So, now that you nose the difference, I never want to hear you make this eye protection mistake ever again.

Safety sunglasses usually have gray or mirrored lenses. These lenses are most commonly used for outdoor applications because they do such a fine job of protecting against the world’s greatest monster, and provider… the sun. Sure, she gives us life, but accidentally fall asleep outside smothered in baby oil and butter and watch out!

The sun can burn your eyes, cause eyestrain and eye fatigue. Safety sunglasses protect against these dangers by allowing only 16% Visible Light Transmission.

Neither gray or mirrored lenses distort color. So, you’ll see objects in natural color while maintaining depth perception. Seeing things in natural color is important for identifying objects and avoiding hazards. The main advantage mirrored safety glasses have over a gray lens is that the mirror coating reflects the sun back away from your eye.

Obviously with the sun blocking qualities, these safety glasses are ideal for outside work including:

Outside construction, arbor and landscaping work, utility work, municipal work, bicycling, sports, sun bathing, cruising for chicks, lawn work, and delivery work.

If you’ve been away from the safety game for any amount of time, make sure to check out some of the truly fashionable styles manufacturers are producing these days.

We are both from frick’n cold Wisconsin (I am a little bitter about our never-ending winter here in Wisconsin so I will move to the next topic).

My husband, who willingly watches cars go ‘round and ‘round in circles, was thrilled. (He has even taken our 2 & 3 year olds to the Matt Kenseth Museum in Cambridge, WI). Now my husband has another reason to celebrate with Kenseth’s win at the Auto Club 500 on Sunday following his Daytona 500 Champion performance.

If you’re like my husband, you’re checking out Matt Kenseth apparel. So while you’re ordering the authentic Daytona Champion Matt Kenseth T-shirt or Hat, you might as well pick up the authentic Wiley X glasses that Matt wears.

GO Matt!

Did you know that back before the current ANSI standards a minimum thickness of safety glasses was required.

In the days of the old standards, a minimum lens thickness was required. The old standard stated that a high impact lens must be at least 2 millimeters thick. This was when size mattered.

Of course, due to the advancements in technology this standard is no longer necessary. Let me put it this way, if the lens works it works. Besides, if the powers that be invented a pair of safety glasses that met the high impact ratings out of saran wrap, does it really matter how thick the lens is?

I think we’re making progress.

Anti-Fog Safety Glasses coatings are becoming increasingly popular in this world of climate change. Many of today’s lenses are equipped with an anti-fog coating, which minimizes lens fogging. This simple coating is most effective in places where rapid change in temperature occurs.

For example, an anti-fog lens would be ideal for workers that move from freezers and air conditioning to factory floors and loading docks frequently. Anti-fog lenses allow these workers to move between these areas of sudden temperature shift without removing their eye protection due to fogging. Which of course increases compliance.

Another new innovation is FogTech. This is a lens coating that you apply yourself, and it works like a charm. In fact it works better than many of the pre-applied anti-fog coatings manufacturers apply. So, if you’ve been trying different glasses, lenses, and manufacturers and you still can’t keep your eye protection from fogging, I’d recommend trying FogTech.

Prevention is one of the most cost-efficient ways to stay healthy. Your eyes are not exceptions. In honor of “Save Your Vision Week,” I’d like to pass along a couple great ways to protect your eyes.

Here we go, ways to keep your eyes healthy:

Schedule regular eye examinations.

Wear protective eyewear when doing any activity in which objects may be flung toward your eye, such as mowing the lawn or working with power tools. Don’t forget eye protection during sports too.

Wear sunglasses that block out ultraviolet light when you are in the sun.

If you are diabetic, take all your medications and follow your physician’s dietary advice.

Eat carotenoid-rich foods which can be found in leafy green foods like broccoli or spinach.

If you stare at a computer for long periods of time, take regular breaks to minimize fatigue. (I need to do that right now!)

Every pair of safety glasses has markings on it in order to let consumers know that it has passed the ANSI standard for safety glasses strength… Which come in the form of two tests.

A basic impact lens must pass the “drop ball” test. In this test a 1 inch steel ball is dropped on the lens from 50 inches. A high impact lens must pass the “high velocity” test. In this test, ¼ inch steel balls are shot at the velocity of 150 feet per second at the lens.

The ANSI standard requires the level of protection to be printed on every pair of new safety glasses.

The basic impact safety glasses are marked with the manufacturers’ logo and a simple “Z87”. For example, if I started selling my own safety glasses (still in production), and my company symbol was “F2K”, the marking on my glasses would read “F2K Z87”.

The high impact safety glasses are marked with the manufacturers’ logo and the “Z87” followed by a “+”. Using my awesome company above, my high impact safety glasses would be marked with a “F2K Z87+”.

Hopefully, this explains the mystery markings on your safety glasses.

I believe we’ve mentioned bifocal safety glasses in passing, but I thought I’d take a little time to go into more detail on these little beauties.

Bifocal safety glasses combine a polycarbonate (hard plastic) lens with essentially reading glasses. This way you don’t need two pair of glasses to get the job done. Most would assume that these glasses are great for individuals with ailing vision… and they are, but many people overlook the fact that these versatile glasses can also be used for detail work.

Now, when selecting a pair of bifocal safety glasses, it’s important to understand the diopters (magnifiers). Commonly found ranging between 1.0 and 3.0 powers, it is important to remember that the higher the number the stronger the magnification. So, if you need a little help… a 1.5 might work, and if you need things pretty big consider a 3.0.

Before, I wrap this up there are one additional note I want to make… I have yet to hear of an entire lens that is magnified and I suspect that it’s a safety hazard. If you’re interested, check out this selection of bifocal safety glasses.

If you’re like me, you want to look your best no matter what you’re doing. If you’re look’n good you’re feel’n good. Here’s some advice that won’t cost you a thing!

Here are some “rules” for finding glasses that best fit your face shape.

Contrast your glasses with your face shape.

Glasses should be on scale with size of your face.

Square Faces: Find frames that are round or curved ovals which will help soften a square face. Rimless frames are also a good choice. Try something similar to Harley Davidson 100 Series.

Round Faces: To better balance your face, choose straight or angular frames. Rectangular frames will help balance the roundness. Also, try to find glasses that have a high temple to help lengthen the face. Good choices are Wiley X’s Lacey or Drapht, and AO Safety Privo.

Oval: Lucky you – you can wear almost any kind of frame! Just keep in mind that the glasses should be on scale with the rest of your face. Some popular styles are OCC 300 Series, Harley Davidson Series, Radians Prestige or AO Safety Fuel.

Heart shape: Semi-rimless frames and frames wider at the bottom are good choices (AO Safety Refine Teal, Smith & Wesson Phantom). Stay away from glasses that are wider on top.

Oblong: Go for wider shaped glasses and avoid the smaller styles. Frames should cover as much of the center of the face as possible to give better overall balance. (Wiley X’s Delila, Radians Illusion)

Now go out and look great!

A filtered lens is the most misunderstood lens of all. It’s like Cousin Pete and his slurred speech. Greenish in color, the filtered lens comes in a variety of different shades. The shades are numbered, with the most popular shades being 2.0, 3.0 and 5.0. The highest numbered shades offer the most eye protection.

A filtered lens is worn for applications and environments where others are performing welding tasks such as torch brazing, torch soldering, gas welding and oxygen cutting. These lenses also protect against UV and Infra Red radiation that occurs while working with molten metal.

A simple chart for the most popular shades and the most common uses can be found below:

IR 2.0 – Torch soldering
IR 3.0 – Torch soldering, torch brazing, and cutting
IR 5.0 – Torch brazing, cutting, and gas welding

The lens is actually a clear lens with a mirrored coating. The mirrored coating reflects sunlight and glare, which cuts down on eye fatigue and strain. It provides protection in the sun, but because of its clear lens and the high amount of visible light that passes through, these safety glasses are effective inside as well.

The unique nature of this lens helps your eyes adjust when moving from a shaded area to a bright area and vice versa. Without these this lens it’s like a punch in the face every time you went in and out.

There are a lot of cute colored lenses on safety glasses out there, but what do they do? Is there a reason to have a lens that is baby blue or perfectly pink? Yes, there is a reason and it has nothing to do with fashion or how festive you choose to live your life. Amber, Blue, and Vermilion safety glasses are most commonly used for inspection purposes because of how they filter light. Let’s take a closer look shall we?

Amber Lens Safety Glasses:
Outside of hunters, who use this color lens for its high contrast qualities (which make it easier to see things to shoot at), the amber lens is great for low light conditions to get that extra pop of light. An amber lens absorbs blue and ultraviolet light. Everything seems brighter with an amber lens. They are excellent while working outside at dawn or dusk, and hazy, overcast, and foggy days.

AO Safety Privo Amber Lens Safety Glasses >>

Blue Lens Safety Glasses:
A blue lens is used in semiconductor fabrication, photolithography, and similar industries where there are high levels of incandescent/ fluorescent lamps. They are effective in areas with high levels of yellow light, including sodium vapor lighting. So if you’re surrounded by yellow lights, or you want to reduce the glare from fluorescent lighting you might want to go with a blue lens.

Elvex Xenon Blue Lens Safety Glasses >>

Vermilion Lens Safety Glasses:
Another low light safety glass, the vermilion lens safety glass won’t provide as much contrast as an amber lens, but it still excels in this area while providing glare protection from fluorescent lights like a blue lens would. A vermilion lens also increases the visibility of target point sighting the red alignment or leading beam.

Uvex XC Vermilion Lens Safety Glasses >>

If you’ve used these lenses, let us know about it so we can showcase more options for using these versatile safety glasses. Just put your experiences in the comments section.

Did you know that an estimated 1,000 eye injuries occur in American workplaces each and every day? That is a crap load! (I have no idea technically what a crap load is, but it’s a lot) And the cost of these injuries totals more than $300 million per year when you factor in lost production time, medical expenses, and worker’s comp. And you know what? In this article I’m not even going to harp on the physical well being of the injured.

The funny thing in this equation is how inexpensive safety glasses are. It’s not like it’s some huge investment to make. A down payment on a house is an investment, a pair of safety glasses is like skipping one big mac. Doesn’t seem to make sense does it?

I wish I was barking up a fake tree, but three out of every five injuries occurred when the injured wasn’t wearing eye protection. So eat it doubters… So from a purely fiscal viewpoint get some safety glasses. Especially if you’re an employer, I believe it’s the law and I wouldn’t want to be around when OSHA starts handing out the fines.

What do you think? I think it was the gun that put him over the edge. He was just enjoying his yearly “Guys Weekend” with his college buddies that he’s been doing the past decade.

They drink beer, smoke stogies (ugh!), shoot guns, eat unhealthy food and come home unshaven. Thankfully not in that order since beer and guns don’t mix.

During their shooting time the guys tried out the Radians Rad-Infinity Amber SafetyGlasses . The amber lenses are popular for shooting and hunting because they provide better clarity and contrast. They are also the best for overcast days or indoor ranges. The guys were impressed by how the Rad-Infinity fit. There is a hidden flexible hinge to fit even the bigger faces.

The only regular gun toter of the bunch (a SWAT team member) goes the higher end with Wily X Changeables. They come with clear, amber and smoke lenses that switch out for the different conditions. If you and your gun are regular buddies then this is the smart choice.

The most common eye protection in the universe is clear. Actually I can’t statistically back that up, but I’d be willing to wager a significant chunk of change on it. So let’s take a look at what makes clear safety glasses the most common.

A clear lens is ideal for indoor applications. I’m not saying that you can’t use them outside, but they excel indoors. If you must wear them outside, take comfort. Like most safety glasses, clear lenses can still provide 99.9% UV Protection.

The clear lens offers about 92% visual light transmission (VLT). What does visual light transmission mean? Visual light transmission as the amount of light that passes through an object. 92% means that it’s not stopping too much light. If it’s bright outside and you wearing a clear lens, it’s going to seem bright.

What type of indoor applications would a clear lens be best for? For example, you might use a clear lens for any of the following applications or environments:

Indoor construction, lab work, food processing facilities, American Gladiator competitions, light yard work, garage work, model airplane building, assembly work, factory work, and toe nail clipping.

Popular Clear Examples:

Ladies, here are some interesting statistics I read today:

•90% of eye injuries could have been avoided. (Hello!)

•The average time off work for an eye injury is 2 days.

•Men make up over 80% of all eye injuries.
(This one I found extremely interesting! Especially since a good friend (who’s a woodworker) informed me that he uses his regular eye glasses as safety glasses. You would think he would know better. If you don’t like taking off your glasses then invest in some Over Specs safety glasses. Regular eye glasses still can let in debris and don’t meet ANSI standards.)

•Across the U.S. there are 2000 eye injuries each day that require medical attention.

Ladies, there is a good chance your hubby is NOT wearing his safety glasses. My solution was to buy a hot looking pair of safety glasses (I prefer OCC and Wiley X safety glasses) and told my husband how good he looked wearing them. You better believe he wears them all the time. If only getting him to unload the dishwasher was that easy.

Really. Well, maybe a little. So when I popped into the office the other week I started checking out some new samples someone left out in the main office. Fair game, right?

Anyway, I am now “in love” with the new Rad-Light™ Clip-On LED Light. It was all I could do not to sneak them home with me. What sold me was that I can put it on most any of my safety glasses (it has a spring clip) AND it has a 360? rotation. That way you can adjust the light beam and not move your head in a weird uncomfortable angle to get the light beam in the right place. How cool is that? Besides that, it has a power switch and super bright LED bulb.

The more I think about it. I need to stop being selfish. All the guys in my family are going to want one so I better make sure they have their own. This one is definitely going to be a popular stocking stuffer in my family this year!

We all know that windblown particles such as dust, sand, cement, and chemicals can cause serious eye irritation and damage. They’re also beneficial for contact wearers and sufferers of dry eye syndrome.

Go-Specs were field tested by our personal Grumpy Old Man! My back door neighbor is a Harley riding, wood working, blue collar guy who calls it like he sees it. He’s a grumpy old man who will tell me a product is crap and doesn’t sugar coat anything. Think Walter Matthau with more muscle and body hair – or maybe don’t… that image isn’t too pretty.

He was very suspicious of the new Elvex safety glasses I gave him to try. He told me what he likes to wear (Harley Davidson safety glasses – hey, we love the Harley’s too), but he was willing to try them out. He wore them on his motorcycle and at his job. Conclusion? They passed the test. They are priced right, fit well, and don’t piss him off.

Lady Macbeth is just as annoyed by scratched safety glasses as you!

It started with me watching Pimp My Ride, a MTV show where a team “pimps” (custom tailors) a participant’s car. They usually “pimp” a car according to the personality and interests of the car owner. For example, in one episode they added a bowling ball spinner in the truck of a bowling enthusiast. By the end of the show, the chosen vehicle is over-the-top rocking. I wonder what they could do with my Soccer Mom Mini-Van?

Then as I was searching on FlickR I found a picture of someone’s bedazzled safety glasses.

These two events prompted me to “pimp” my own safety glasses. I took my safety glasses (Don’t worry boss, I didn’t use the awesome Wiley X’s you gave me!) and put butterflies, hearts and diamonds on them. These are my subtle garden/yard pair.

Benefits: it’s obvious which ones are yours & reflects a little bit of you. Now I need to plan a wild pair for my sassy days. Any of you “pimp” out your safety glasses? Send me a picture and I will get the Big D to post it for me.

Disclaimer: When “pimping your safety glasses” make sure that you do not obstruct the visibility of your safety glasses or compromise the structural integrity.

Earlier this month John (who works with us) discovered another reason to wear Wiley X Climate Control safety glasses.

(Wiley X’s Climate Control is intended to keep out things out – they have a removable Facial Cavity Seal that locks in the ANSI certified frames, to seal your eyes from anything the weather or road throws at people. Usually people who suffer from dry eyes or wear contacts love these safety glasses).

Back to John. He was doing yard work and decided to move one of his drainage hoses. To make the hose less conspicuous, he decided to put it under an evergreen. Apparently a bee hive also decided to be inconspicuous under the evergreen too and didn’t appreciate John disturbing them. They swarmed his head, stinging him at least 18-20 times around his face. He was so thankful for the Facial Cavity Seal that protected his eyes from getting stung. He was stung around his glasses but nothing near his eyes.

In October we are presenting a similar “climate control” offered by Elvex. It’s a lower cost solution. They were marketed for wood workers but really are ideal for anyone who wants that extra protection.

Last I heard, we can offer them starting October 6th. I have a pair in my office right now sitting in my fruit bowl. (I work at my kitchen island, a perk of having great bosses). They are comfy and perfect for people like me who deal with dry eyes.

These great photos caught my attention because I thought they were wonderful illustrations of what can happen.

Henry, a FlickR contributor, generously shared his safety glasses photos with our blog along with these poignant words of wisdom:

“Kids, here’s a tip from me to you: don’t try to scratch your nose with the same hand that’s currently holding a lighted oxy-acetylene welding torch. Not if you want to keep both your eyebrows, all of your hair, and the safety glasses perched on top of your head.”

Henry generously allowed me to use his photos of the torched safety glasses. Henry’s torched safety glasses inspired many writing ideas, but I kept coming back to his original words. And, well, I thought he said it best so I set aside my original post.

Accidents happen. They can happen to anyone. The best we can do is to be prepared and take precautions. Are you prepared? Are you safe? Think about it. I sure do. The last time I wasn’t prepared I had my bonus baby nine months later. Not all surprises or “accidents” turn out to be that cool.

“The incident happened back in 2001 or 2002. Oddly enough, I was wearing my big black rimmed glasses, which some people would consider to be ‘safety’ glasses. Yet, somehow this spiraled, tiny piece of steel that looked like macaroni got flung into my eyeball.

It didn’t hurt until noon on the next day. It burned and/or felt sort of like having sand in your eye. I looked at myself in the mirror and saw a little rust colored dot. I bounced around to a couple of doctors and wound up at the eye clinic in town.

The procedure went without incident. They put a Novocaine style eye drop in there to numb everything. The doc had me stick my head in a machine to stabilize everything and he dug out the metal with long pointy tweezers. He showed me the piece of metal and it surprised me. It was about a 3/8″ piece of corkscrewed metal. It was that deep into my eye and I didn’t feel it until about 12 hours after it found its way into there.

Fortunately, I have my sight and nothing bad happened. Two years after my event, a close friend had a freak accident with needle nose pliers and almost lost his eye. Having accidents like this happen close to you is the best motivator to practice safety. A million stories usually are met with, ‘It won’t happen to me.’ Until it does ” -Luke H
