Citizen’s Fall Arrest
Many of you have probably heard the terms “fall arrest” and “fall restraint” being passed around interchangeably. They are NOT the same thing. So, in order to point out how things work in the fall protection world let’s break these two similar but different terms…
But before I dive in, these are both forms of Active Fall Protection which involves wearing a harness, as opposed to Passive Fall Protection which involves guardrails and warning lines… Anywho
Fall Arrest refers to situations when it’s possible for the worker to actually fall. Meaning that you need a shock absorbing lanyard and some sort of rescue system. If you’re in fall arrest environment, and you slip, fall, and roll down the roof, you will fall off. It’s almost like a bungee jump. I hope that makes sense…
Fall Restraint on the other hand describes a situation when your lanyard or retractable doesn’t allow you to physically reach the edge of the roof. It’s impossible. Fall restraint is more like being on a leash, which can be very fun in some situations. Why must you guys always go blue? I was implying that while restrained, you don’t have to worry about getting falling off.
So, there you have it. Fall arrest allows you to dangle while fall restraint keeps you from getting to the action. I also think it’s fair to say now that you have no right to screw these two very very, almost identical phrases up.
