Duty To Have Fall Protection… Inspected

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As many of you know, OSHA (Big Brother) makes it’s living by policing job sites for safety.  But how does that effect you?  Well, I did a little research and I found some statistics from October 2007 to September 2008 that you may find interesting.

In this time period 4,164 companies (including roofers, carpenters, general contractors, masons, and plumbers) were sited on Standard 19260501.

You don’t know what Standard 19260501 is?  It’s the “Duty To Have Fall Protection.”  That’s a lot of companies.  The kicker is that these companies all have 1-9 employees.  That sounds like a small business if I’ve ever heard of one.

So the 4,164 of the companies they inspected were cited.  The bad news is that there were more citations than companies meaning that some companies got more than one citation.  Could I say citation anymore?

Now, in case you’re wondering the fine total for just this standard eclipsed $5,106,754!  That’s an average fine of $1,226 per company.

So ask yourself.  Is $1,226 an expense you’d like to afford in a recession?  And if 4,164 companies were caught, how many companies did OSHA inspect?  Are you next on the list?  Be safe.

Hello Safety Frank, I came across your Blog and I am hoping you could point me in the correct direction. I am a new safety supervisor. I have been the IT Consultant for a Roofing Company for the last 4 years. I just finished my 3rd week of being the company safety supervisor for a roofing company which has 3 divisions and around 185+ employees during the height of the summer. When I took over this position I have found out that there are no digital records at all. As you would imagine because of my IT background I am all about digital records. I am presently in the middle of taking all the paper and converting it to digital. I have been searching high and low for Construction Safety Templetes, Forms and have not had very much success. I will be buying a new 14″ Tablet PC which will have a special screen so it can work outside in direct sunlight. When I have this in am hoping that I will have all the templates in place so I can do all my worksite safety inspections, hazard inspections, toolbox talks, etc. electronically then go back to my office and print off for fileing the paper way. As it is now I waste to much time searching for paperwork of the other safety supervisors, this is not efficient. I am hoping you can point me in the right direction.
      Thank you in advance.
