Eyeballs, Accidents & Novocaine
Here is another interesting story about eye protection and accidents that was brought to my attention by Luke. I found Luke H on FLickR. He didn’t have any pictures of his incident but he did write me, sharing his enlightening story. Eyeball pictures gross me out anyway so maybe it’s better to have the story instead of the picture. Thanks, Luke H, for sharing your story!!!
“The incident happened back in 2001 or 2002. Oddly enough, I was wearing my big black rimmed glasses, which some people would consider to be ‘safety’ glasses. Yet, somehow this spiraled, tiny piece of steel that looked like macaroni got flung into my eyeball.
It didn’t hurt until noon on the next day. It burned and/or felt sort of like having sand in your eye. I looked at myself in the mirror and saw a little rust colored dot. I bounced around to a couple of doctors and wound up at the eye clinic in town.
The procedure went without incident. They put a Novocaine style eye drop in there to numb everything. The doc had me stick my head in a machine to stabilize everything and he dug out the metal with long pointy tweezers. He showed me the piece of metal and it surprised me. It was about a 3/8″ piece of corkscrewed metal. It was that deep into my eye and I didn’t feel it until about 12 hours after it found its way into there.
Fortunately, I have my sight and nothing bad happened. Two years after my event, a close friend had a freak accident with needle nose pliers and almost lost his eye. Having accidents like this happen close to you is the best motivator to practice safety. A million stories usually are met with, ‘It won’t happen to me.’ Until it does
